Trying to piece together some dates from the various journals to create a time-frame
Joined the Glasgow Yeomanry a few years prior to WW1:
Postcard reads - "This is the Squadron down at water but it has been a failure. This is my horse marked"
I colorised the following image - I think that is Jack on the left - not sure which regiment this is ... but they used to go on camps as can be seen from the postcard above.
As part of the 11th Hussars he then formed part of the Escorted for the Crown Prince of Germany - 1911. He has marked himself with a cross which I have enhanced to red - the horse at the front with the larger white stripe is the Crown Prince of Germany's horse.
From 11th Hussars website : "His Imperial Highness Crown Prince William of the German Empire and Prussia is appointed the 11th Hussars first Colonel-in Chief by King George V and reviews the 11th Hussars".

From Ypres to Mons is 100 k, to the Somme it is 100 miles..
He became a Captain around about August/September 1917 as this is mentioned in the bulletin from October 1917, Vol 1 No. 5 as well as in some newspaper clippings,. He moves into the Black Watch at that point
