Kelly Family Photographs and History

The Kelly Family grew up at 39 Ashton Lane off Byres Road, Glasgow. James, the father was a coachman for a family called the Aspins and possibly also for Andrew Bain. The family mews and stables is now a trendy restaurant called Brel!

The photograph below shows the Kelly Family as a young family in Dunoon on holiday. They would holiday with the Aspin family to which James Kelly was the coachman and he would bring the families round to Dunoon in the coach with the horses each summer. Annie was friendly with the daughter of the Aspins, Madge (Margaret?)

Annie Kelly (born 1893)

A young John (Jack) Kelly (born 1890)

As a young soldier he was in the Glasgow Yeomanry in 1906 then the 11th Hussars and here he is in 1911 escorting the Crown Prince of Germany (Honorary Colonel in Chief) Frederick Wilhelm on a visit to Britain. John Kelly's horse is marked with a red cross and the Crown Prince is the one whose horse has the largest white strip in the front row - there was also a cross marking him on the postcard.
(Here is a photograph of the Crown Prince which must have been from that day :

Photograph taken in 1915 for Meg's Wedding.  This was Jack's sole visit from the front. Home for Meg's wedding.  James Kelly, his father died shortly after at Glasgow Fair time, beginning of July?.  Jack's Bandolier and cap badge show him to be a Hussar still heavily armed (on the Byres Road)

David, a grandchild of Annie Kelly, Marty, a grandchild of John (Jack) Kelly and Melanie, a great grandchild of John (Jack) Kelly, at the old family home, the coach-house at Ashton Lane, Glasgow. This is where John Kelly grew up and you can visit the house to this day as it has been preserved and is now a restaurant in a trendy part of the West End of Glasgow !
